Bacharach
Bacharach’s
experienced its heyday in the middle ages. From around
1200, because of its position on the Rhine, the town
was one of the most important storage, shipping and trading
points for wine and wood. Bacharach was mainly financed
by way of trade tariffs which made the town prosperous
indeed. However the unpopular tariffs were to play a
roll in the towns eventual demise and Bacharachs importance
as a trading point waned around the time of the 30 years
war. The town has however retained its prestige in the
area of wine production and is a popular tourist destination.
Victor Hugo described Bacharach as the most beautiful
town in the world.
